A Change in Plans

Those of you who know me best know that I struggle with worry, and that I don’t deal with change well at all. I believe very strongly that God is teaching me something through the time that I spend down here in Santiago–flexibility and paying attention to what God wants me to do rather than following my own plans. I think today is a good example of this. Our plans were to leave at 6am this morning for Dajabon. Dajabon is on the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. There we were going to meet up with about six Haitian ministers for whom I was going to present the same class that I presented last week here in Santiago. The problem is we got a phone call from one of the ministers yesterday saying that because there was violence going on at the border, they did not think they could get across and back safely–so our plans were changed.
Now there would have been a time that I would have been frustrated by this, or even discouraged. Our plans had been ruined! I’ve shared with you all how excited I have been that we were going to be able to offer this class to the Haitian guys. But here’s what I’m learning. Instead of thinking my plans have been ruined, I’m thinking about what plans God has for me today. What opportunities will come up for significant conversations that may have been otherwise missed. And you know what? It’s already happened once today. One of the G.O. Ministries staff members came up and saw me sitting here and said, “I was hoping I’d see you around today, because there is a question our Bible study group has that we want to hear your answer to.” It was a meaningful conversation, and I hope and pray that God will bring others my way today! My prayer is, “God let me see your direction and your plan rather than to focus upon my own.” I want to change my own attitude so that rather than a change of plans being frustrating, it’s an opportunity for God to do something unexpected through me. I hope that’s true for you today as well. What incredible things might God do through you today because your plans don’t work out?
